Independent. Unbiased. Technical.

Our History

Brent Cook met Paul van Eeden in 1997 when they both worked with Rick Rule at Global Resource Investments (now Sprott USA). In 2003 Paul started writing a newsletter focused on gold, macroeconomic trends, and the junior mining space. In January 2008 Paul recognized the severity of stresses on the US banking sector and foresaw the stock market crash. He sold everything he could, including his newsletter.

Brent had been contributing to his letter with exploration commentary for a few years while executing his own consulting jobs for major mining companies and a few funds. In March 2008, he took over Paul’s letter and subscriber base right when the Global Financial Crisis was in full swing. Later in 2008, Brent rebranded the letter Exploration Insights and began focusing on the junior exploration space with the goal of providing not just stock picks, but also context and a nuanced view of the exploration business that would help subscribers in their own due diligence. The website was structured such that it was possible for subscribers to research back to any company or topic that was ever discussed in the letter. Every good, bad or dumb investment made is still here, as well as some absolutely brilliant rants (you need to subscribe to gain access to the archives).

While touring mining projects on analyst trips, Brent got to know Joe Mazumdar and was impressed by his extensive knowledge of geology and mining, plus the capital markets and inner workings of the major mining companies, but, more importantly, his straightforward, no BS assessment of projects and companies. It took nearly two years to convince Joe of the advantages of being independent, which included the ability to state (write) exactly how he sees it. There was also some hesitation on his part in entering the underworld of the newsletter business. However, Joe saw the light and published his first piece— “Going where the reward exceeds risk”— in the December 6, 2015 letter (Issue No. 353), and since then he has been an increasingly positive and important addition to Exploration Insights.

In 2017, Joe became majority owner and publisher of Exploration Insights, and the new and much-improved website is all his doing. Today, the content of the letter, stock picks, and opinions remain a collaboration between him and Brent. They communicate almost daily, constantly assessing exploration data; travel extensively; and, ultimately, arrive at well-reasoned investment conclusions that result in a well rounded and researched product. While Brent owns nearly every stock in the Exploration Insights portfolio, Joe is the gatekeeper to what ultimately goes into it, as well as in the newsletter.

In a nutshell, Exploration Insights is a collaboration between two experienced economic geologists analyzing the broader metals market, the mining sector and, specifically, the junior explorers. It is about what I and (usually) Brent are doing with our money in the sector. Our only compensation is from subscriptions and what we might make on our investments. If you would like to join the hundreds of susbcribers that benefit from our insights, subscribe now. Paul’s letter was US$140/month—that is the same price you pay today.
